DIY Natural Hand Sanitizer | Naturopath Michelle Savard

Good hygiene and a strong immune system: that is what is needed to stay healthy during the flu season. Today we will talk about the later: hand hygiene. Contamination of viruses such as the coronovirus occur when an infected person coughs, sneezes or exhales and small droplets from the nose or mouth land on objects and surfaces around the person. Contamination happens by touching contaminated objects or surfaces, then touching eyes, nose or mouth.

According to the CDC the best option to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria is to wash your hands with soap and water. If you are out and about and it isn’t possible for you to do so, using a hand sanitizer is your best choice. With the coronavirus and the many other viruses of the winter months prevalent, a hand sanitizer is a must when your outside of your home and far from a clean sink. Here is a recipe that will keep your hands (and your children’s hands) germs free at all times.

Ingredients:

  • Reusable small spray bottle (glass or plastic)
  • 70% alcohol
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Tea tree essential oil
  • Vitamin E (optional – used to increase shelf life and to help moisturize hands)

Instructions

  1. Take your spray bottle and fill 3/4 of it with vodka
  2. Add 10 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops of tea tree essential oil and 5 drops of vitamin E
  3. Fill up the rest with aloe vera gel
  4. Put tap and shake the bottle well

This is a non-toxic formula, it is paraben-free, fragrance-free and phtalate-free. It will leave your hands clean, smelling good and moisturized. The combination of alcohol as well as tea tree and lavender essential oil make this hand sanitizer an effective anti-bacterial.

Warning and Tips

Essential oils should be handled with care. Avoid contact with eyes or mouth. These as well as the hand sanitizers should NEVER be ingested therefore if you are making these hand sanitizers with kids proper care needs to be take. Keep out of reach of children.

These are quick to make and great to keep in a back pack, diaper bag, purse, etc. If you are like me and live in Torino right now a lot of the pharmacies are out of commercial hand sanitizers so making your own is a great option.
